What you are probably seeing

You see a spike in job postings that ask for proof of AI tool-building skills, but your portfolio remains empty. The idea feels too large, so you stare at a blank editor and make no progress.

Workday data shows demand for these skills has jumped, yet you are still stuck in the ‘knowing’ phase. You recognize that you need a near-term milestone to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Why it happens

A blank page is intimidating because the goal of ‘building an AI tool’ is too vague. Without a specific problem to solve, you cannot choose the right tools or define the output, which causes analysis paralysis.

The shift toward AI skills is rapid, but most learning resources focus on theory or massive production systems. This leaves small operators without a clear, manageable path to demonstrate practical competence in a short time frame.

What changed recently

2026-10-07 · Getting good at AI is a big goal. A nearer milestone: one small tool you made yourself. My co-host Sondra says AI skills help you do your job better, faster. Workday, which sells HR software, says job
Workday tracks the shift for that gap:
• Job-posting demand for AI tool-building skills rose 51% from Sept 2025.
• AI skills help individuals work better and faster.
• Building one small AI tool is a near-term milestone.

Step by step

1. Identify one repetitive task in your current job or business that takes more than five minutes daily. Define the exact input and output for that task to scope your project. Choose a low-code platform or simple API that connects your input to an AI model without heavy backend work. Create a user interface using a basic web template or spreadsheet button that triggers the AI function. Document the process in a short readme file that explains the problem, the solution, and the code or workflow used.
