What you are probably seeing
You notice that adding more historical data or documentation to your prompts does not improve accuracy and sometimes makes the model ignore key instructions.
Your test scores drop when you increase input length, even though the correct answer is clearly present somewhere in the middle of the provided text.
Why it happens
Models have a limited attention span for effective reasoning. They tend to prioritize information at the very beginning or very end of an input, causing details in the middle to be overlooked or forgotten.
Excess context dilutes the signal. When a prompt contains thousands of irrelevant tokens, the model struggles to distinguish what is actually relevant to the task, leading to curation errors rather than generation failures.

Snowflake guides solopreneurs on context trade-offs:
• 10 of 12 models lost 50%+ performance at 32K tokens
• Effective context is below advertised limits
• Models favor info at start or end of inputs

Step by step
1. Move your most critical instructions and constraints to the very start of the prompt to ensure they hold the highest attention weight.
2. Place essential facts or desired outputs at the end of the prompt to leverage the recency bias that many models exhibit.
3. Aggressively strip filler text, redundant examples, and unrelated history from your input before submitting it to the AI.
4. Use retrieval augmented generation techniques to fetch only the specific documents or data points relevant to the current query instead of dumping everything.
5. Test your prompts with minimal viable context first, then add information back in only when performance degrades and you identify a specific missing need.
